Step 1: Preparing the Ingredients
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, oats, and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Reserve 1 cup of the crumb mixture for the streusel topping.
- Press the remaining crumb mixture evenly into the prepared pan.
- Bake for 15 minutes or until lightly golden.
Step 2: Cooking the Main Components
- While the crust is baking, prepare the apple filling. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Sprinkle the reserved crumb mixture over the apples, tossing gently to combine.
- Once the crust is done, spread the apple mixture evenly over the hot crust.
Step 3: Assembling the Dish
- Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the apples.
Step 4: Baking or Final Cooking Touches
- Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling around the edges.
- Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan set on a wire rack.
Notes
For a no-bake version, use a graham cracker crust and refrigerate the bars instead of baking.
