  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter, cold
Caramel Drizzle (optional)
  • 0.25 cup caramel sauce or caramel bits

  • Pastry cutter or fork
  • Spatula
  • Aluminum foil (optional)
  • Cooling rack

Method

Step 1: Preparing the Ingredients
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, oats, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Reserve 1 cup of the crumb mixture for the streusel topping.
  5. Press the remaining crumb mixture evenly into the prepared pan.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes or until lightly golden.
Step 2: Cooking the Main Components
  1. While the crust is baking, prepare the apple filling. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  2. Sprinkle the reserved crumb mixture over the apples, tossing gently to combine.
  3. Once the crust is done, spread the apple mixture evenly over the hot crust.
Step 3: Assembling the Dish
  1. Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the apples.
Step 4: Baking or Final Cooking Touches
  1. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling around the edges.
  2. Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan set on a wire rack.

Notes

For a no-bake version, use a graham cracker crust and refrigerate the bars instead of baking.
