Method
Step 1: Preparing the Ingredients
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Peel, core, and slice the apples into 8 equal wedges each.
- In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the water (or apple cider) and lemon juice, then bring to a boil.
Step 2: Assembling the Dumplings
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry to about 0.125-inch thickness.
- Cut the pastry into 8 equal squares.
- Place an apple wedge in the center of each square. Sprinkle each apple wedge with some of the brown sugar mixture.
- Fold the pastry over the apple, pressing the edges to seal. You can use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative touch.
- Place the dumplings on a parchment-lined baking sheet, seam side down.
Step 3: Baking the Dumplings
- Brush the tops of the dumplings with the melted butter mixture.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the apples are tender. If the pastry starts to brown too quickly, cover the dumplings loosely with aluminum foil.
- Remove from the oven and let the dumplings cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
For a crispier pastry, brush the dumplings with an egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp of water). To balance the sweetness, use a tart apple variety or add a squeeze of lemon juice to the filling.
