Ingredients

Group 1
  • 4 medium Apples
  • 1 sheet Refrigerated Puff Pastry
  • 0.5 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp Nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp Lemon Juice
  • 0.25 cup Butter
  • 1 cup Water

Equipment

  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Rolling Pin
  • Pastry brush
  • Aluminum Foil

Method

Step 1: Preparing the Ingredients
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples into 8 equal wedges each.
  3. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  4. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the water (or apple cider) and lemon juice, then bring to a boil.
Step 2: Assembling the Dumplings
  1. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry to about 0.125-inch thickness.
  2. Cut the pastry into 8 equal squares.
  3. Place an apple wedge in the center of each square. Sprinkle each apple wedge with some of the brown sugar mixture.
  4. Fold the pastry over the apple, pressing the edges to seal. You can use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative touch.
  5. Place the dumplings on a parchment-lined baking sheet, seam side down.
Step 3: Baking the Dumplings
  1. Brush the tops of the dumplings with the melted butter mixture.
  2. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the apples are tender. If the pastry starts to brown too quickly, cover the dumplings loosely with aluminum foil.
  3. Remove from the oven and let the dumplings cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For a crispier pastry, brush the dumplings with an egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp of water). To balance the sweetness, use a tart apple variety or add a squeeze of lemon juice to the filling.
