Cake
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 eggs
  • 0.75 cup vegetable oil
  • 0.5 cup sour cream
  • 2 cups apples peeled & grated
Caramel Topping
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cup light brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup heavy cream
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch Baking Dish
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Whisk
  • Rubber Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Grater or food processor with grating attachment
  • Saucepan
  • Wooden spoon
  • Cooling rack

Method

Step 1: Preparing the Ingredients
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, light brown sugar, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.
  3. In another bowl, mix eggs, vegetable oil, and sour cream until well combined.
  4. Peel and grate the apples, then set them aside.
Step 2: Cooking the Main Components
  1. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the wet ingredients. Stir until just combined.
  2. Fold in the grated apples.
  3. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.
Step 3: Assembling the Dish
  1. Bake for 28-32 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Step 4: Baking or Final Cooking Touches
  1. While the cake is baking, prepare the caramel topping. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add brown sugar, heavy cream, salt, and vanilla extract. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the mixture comes to a boil. Let it boil for 1 minute without stirring.
  2. Once the cake is done, pour the caramel topping evenly over the hot cake. Let it cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Ensure the cake is fully cooled before slicing and serving to allow the caramel topping to set properly.
