  • 0.5 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 2 each Cinnamon sticks
  • 2 each Star anise
  • 1 tsp Lemon zest

Equipment

  • Saucepan or Dutch oven with a lid
  • Slotted spoon
  • Sharp Knife
  • Vegetable peeler
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Cutting Board

Method

Step 1: Preparing the Ingredients
  1. Peel the pears, leaving the stems intact. Slice the bottoms off so the pears can stand upright.
  2. In a saucepan, combine water, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, star anise, and lemon zest. Bring to a boil.
Step 2: Cooking the Pears
  1. Place the pears in the saucepan, standing upright. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and let simmer for 20-30 minutes, turning occasionally, until tender.
Step 3: Assembling the Dish
  1. Using a slotted spoon, carefully remove the pears from the liquid and place them in a serving dish.
Step 4: Basting the Pears
  1. Increase the heat of the poaching liquid and let it simmer until it thickens slightly. Spoon the liquid over the pears to glaze.

Notes

Ensure pears are submerged in the liquid while cooking. Be gentle when handling the pears to prevent them from breaking apart.
